Mary Grayson Segars

Mary grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she took an interest in sketching at an early age.  She attended the College of William & Mary, where she studied biology.  After six years as a research technician at the University of Georgia Veterinary School, she married a veterinarian and moved to Hartsville, SC, and then eventually to Beaufort, SC, where she decided to pursue art in earnest.

Although she had previously learned the technique of scratchboard, adding pen and ink and colored pencils, while living in Beaufort, she began dabbling in oil painting - her first fluid medium.  This produced a virtual explosion in my life.  "Fairly overwhelmed by color theory at first, I began by using only primary colors, which still constitute my palette today."

After painting for only five months, Mary had her first show.  Mary's work explores interesting and varied subject matter.  Her color is dynamic and her brushwork energetic, resulting in exceptional paintings that have been acquired by important collections throughout the country.  A signature quality in Mary's work is her concentration on bold light and dark patterns in her composition.

Mary's many awards include People's Choice, First Place, Second Place, Excellence Awards, and Merit Awards.  She has produced three large pieces of public art in Beaufort and her work is shown in galleries in Savannah and Beaufort.  She is listed on the SC Arts Commission roster for approved artist-in-residences.
